gm Dark Forest community!

We are excited to announce the first ever Dark Forest hackathon, run by the dfdao team. The hackathon will be virtual, with an optional in-person meetup at EthDenver.

All participants will receive a POAP. Top projects will earn a prize NFT!

What Can I Build?

DF Hackathon 2022 will have three tracks. The top 3 projects in each, as judged by the dfdao core team, will be awarded a dfdao NFT.

The tracks are:

Plugins

  • Write a new client plugin or modify an existing one.
  • Ex: Updating Repeat Attack with the ability to send silver.

New game mechanics

  • Using darkforest-local and the Community Round Builder’s guide, add a new feature to the game.
  • Ex: Allowing asteroids to upgrade their silver cap and/or silver growth.

Community Resources/Art

  • Contribute to the DF wiki or make a tutorial/strategy guide
  • Create Dark Forest art or in-game assets like sprites, badges, etc for future rounds

Where Can I Build?

To develop new game mechanics, check out darkforest-local.

Stay tuned for the Dark Forest Playground, a universe deployed to xDai that anyone can use for plugin testing.

What if I Don’t Know How to Build?

If you are new to DF, join our Learn to Play round on Saturday, Feb 12.

Playing Dark Forest is a great way to learn about hacking.

You can check the Community Round Builder’s Guide that has in depth explanations of how to set up a local Dark Forest environment and customize the code base.

We will also release a how-to-plugin demonstration to show you how to create your own plugins.

Finally, there will be community discussion in our Discord for the duration of the hackathon.

How do I sign up?

  1. Fill out this Google registration form.
  2. Join the dfdao Discord, read the 📕 rules, and react with the 🔨 emoji to gain access to the Builder role and the 🔨 hackathon channel. We will build and brainstorm together!

How do I submit my project?

Once you join the dfdao Discord and receive the Builder role, you can submit your project in the âś… hackathon-submission channel.

Timeline

The hackathon will commence on Sunday, February 13 and run until Sunday, February 20.

There will be an optional in-person meetup on February 19 at or around the Sports Castle in Denver, Colorado.

Judging will take place from February 21–25.

Winners will be officially announced on February 26.

POAPs and NFT prizes will be distributed by March 1.

Judging Criteria

We will choose the winning projects for each category based on the following criteria:

Originality

  • How much of your own work went into your submission?
  • Example: if you are modifying an existing plugin, we want to see that you have significantly changed / upgraded the plugin.

Creativity

Quality

  • How well is your submission implemented?
  • A great idea might be original and creative, but it also needs to be functional.

Spread the word!

Please share this 0xhank graphic on social media if you’re excited like us!
