Into the Uncanny Valley of Fake News

A case study in how a cluster of websites managed to pose as legitimate sources and, despite being exposed, got away with it

Some of the doppelgänger sites, and the fake news stories they have published.

The Guardian case

Tracing the network

“The Guardian story ‘Former MI6 Chief Admits Defeat to Putin…’ was entirely true. Better published by original The Guardian, not the fake one.” (Source: BuzzFeed News)

The song is ended, the malady lingers on

Search result for Sir John Scarlett’s name in Russian on pravda.ru, made around 13:30 UTC on August 16. The result is headlined, “How Putin destroyed the CIA and MI6’s plan to break up Russia”; the fragmentary opening passage runs, “Thus, in his interview, John Scarlett declassified the shared US-UK plan to break up Russia. In his words…”
The post from Galina Bichurina, attributing the text to Israel Shamir. The second paragraph (three words long) and the opening of the third paragraph match, word for word, Shamir’s tweet.

Different fakes, same pattern
