Welcome onboard, Ioana Surpateanu
The DIA team grows. Today we welcome Ioana Surpateanu, formerly Co-Head of Government Affairs Europe at Citibank, who will take charge of DIA’s regulatory and innovation strategy as Chief Strategy Officer.
We are delighted to welcome Ioana Surpateanu as the newest DIA team member. As former Co-Head of European Government Affairs at Citibank, Ioana brings years of experience and networks in the European financial and regulatory space to help DIA foster the conversation with regulators and institutional bodies as well as driving DIA’s innovation strategy.
Introduction and background
With 15+ years of expertise in crypto and blockchain in her career, Ioana is specialised in the design and implementation of strategies and EU-level policy engagement, with a clear focus on digital assets and emerging technologies.
During her stay at Citibank, Ioana led the innovation strategy for Europe level on emerging technologies, as well as the strategic investments team of Citi’s Markets and Securities Services (MSS). Before, she headed the Cabinet in the European Parliament for EPP Group, focusing on digital single markets, strategic investments funds and digital infrastructures. Ioana has also worked as Vice-chair in the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU (AmCham EU).
Ioana’s role at DIA
Ioana will leverage her experience and expertise to drive the DIA Innovation Lab as well as nurture the conversation with regulatory bodies to develop DIA’s positioning within the regulated traditional finance space. On the other hand, Ioana will play a crucial role in designing and launching a massive DeFi educational and promotional campaign with international policymakers and regulators. And last but not least, Ioana will be in charge of kick-starting a platform for women in emerging technologies.
Ioana, fully aligned with DIA’s mission, shares her excitement to join DIA:

Democratising access to data and ensuring transparency and verifiable quality via a community driven mechanism is something I fully relate to. In addition, as a core infrastructure component, it opens up enormous possibilities in terms of recreating a more inclusive financial world. DeFi has considerably and swiftly unlocked access for both users and creators of financial products and instruments. To ensure it evolves in the right direction, this new paradigm is contingent on a few prerequisites — transparency and impeccable data sets are amongst the most important ones.”
