My Story: Type 2 diabetes in my community

Zahoor Bukhari, a retired Product Development Engineer from Newham, has Type 2 diabetes and works hard to promote awareness of the condition. He shared his story with Diabetes UK:

He says: “South Asians are at a higher risk of diabetes than other people. There are about 80 people living in my small community and about 25 of them have Type 2 diabetes.”

Zahoor, 68, lost two of his fingers as a result of diabetes and has called on the Government to put an end to avoidable diabetes-related amputations which have reached an all-time record high in England.

He adds: “Living with the impact of an amputation day in and day out, I am concerned about the increasing number of diabetes-related amputations taking place in England. An amputation is a devastating complication that is a direct result of my diabetes and resulted in me having to give up playing cricket, which I really enjoyed.

“Managing diabetes can be a daily struggle in itself, and far too many people with the condition go on to develop devastating health complications such as amputation.”
