How do you REALLY pronounce kubectl?
Until I can figure it out, I’m calling it “that kube tool”
The first time I came across the term kubectl
(which was before I knew what it was — but it’s a command line tool that lets you control Kubernetes clusters), I Googled how to pronounce it. I had to. I knew that if I didn’t figure out the correct pronunciation right off the bat, the wrong pronunciation would be permanently ingrained in my mind.
The only thing I found was @gwaldo’s lightning talk from All Things Open 2018, which I found humorous, but not as definitive as he claimed.
Let’s break this down.
Waldo provides us with this handy chart to help us separate the first and second halves of the term kubectl
.

It’s not pronounced CUBE-er-net-eez
, so kubectl
probably shouldn’t be pronounced cube
-anything, but forget about that. koob
sounds ridiculous, so any options that start with koob
are automatically out, as far as I’m concerned.
This leaves us with cube cuddle
(aww), cube control
(meh), and cube cuttle
(this is a cuttle, by the way, so that’s a NO from me). I’m going to add cube c-t-l
and cube-éctal
to Waldo’s list, since those sound logical to me. (He proposed koob-c-t-l
, koo-bektal
, and koob-ektal
as options, but those start with koob
, so no.)
Since we’ve gotten the initial evaluation out of the way, I think we can narrow it down to a few finalists.
Cube Cuddle
This is obviously the most endearing option. I have nothing to say about this other than “aww!”.

Cube Control
This is a fun one. Reminds me of Dungeons and Dragons. Here is a wizard casting kubectl
(pronounced cube control) on an enemy. I hear this one does 7d10+40 damage on a failed save, by the way.

Cube Cuttle
Alright… it’s growing on me…

Cube-éctal
ectal
means outside/exterior (as opposed to ental
, which means inside/interior). These cubes = ectal.

Cube C-T-L
There’s nothing particularly great about this — in fact, it’s probably the most neutral option — but I made the picture as cute as possible to make it seem like a winner.

Since there’s no consensus here, I suppose you can call it whatever you want (as long as it doesn’t start with koob
).
Personally… it’s cube-éctal
in my mind, and it might be too late to change that (I knew this would happen!). I’ll still saythat cube tool
aloud, though.
