The Tinder app has been the biggest hit in the dating segment. Like a person, swipe right. Don’t like a person, swipe left. (JUST DON’T FORGET TO READ THE BIO,NOT ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GOLD). If the other person has mutual feelings, then you connect. Simple as that. Let us analyse the tinder algorithm,i.e,how it shows people in your list.

  • Close by people are given preference over far away people
  • People online and nearby get the highest preference
  • Mutual interests are looked up using facebook API
  • People with mutual connections get a higher preference score.

The question is,can such an algorithm be used for networking? Let’s see.

What do you do when your flight gets delayed and you are stuck at the airport? The airport will at the same time have people with backgrounds in different field and insane knowledge. May be this is the right way to spend time on airport. Gain and share knowledge. Who cares about dating anyway?

A person can sign up and list his expertise. The more people he meets, the better his score gets. After a certain level, the person gets paid for meeting. OH WOW,WE JUST MONETIZED KNOWLEDGE.

This would apply a somewhat copy of tinder algorithm, people nearby with expertise in the field you want to meet are given the highest score. Or a random list of people nearby can be generated. Either way,it seems like a good way to network.
