I like honey! Mostly for breakfast, spread on a slice of toasted bread with butter!
Who knows whether a 5,500-year-old one would taste the same…

Not too far from Tbilisi in Georgia, archeologists discovered the tomb of a wealthy noblewoman containing numerous jars of honey buried with her, in case she became hungry in the afterlife.
Georgians are known for being the first winemakers in the world, but considering those jars date back 5,500 years, they may also hold the title of the first beekeepers.

The honey jars found, which came in linden, berry, and meadow-flower varieties, were 2,000 years older than the ones found in Tutankhamun’s tomb, which had previously been considered the oldest. The archeologist who made this discovery reported that “their scent was still sweet and intense with musky undertones”.

I really think that honey is fascinating. I mean, it literally never spoils!
But why is that?

Basically, honey contains very little water and has an acidic pH, which creates an inhospitable environment for bacteria and microorganisms. This is the secret of honey, which allows it to remain preserved indefinitely while keeping the same scent and taste.

So, next time you’re enjoying your breakfast, maybe eating the very same toasted bread with butter and honey, remember that that honey can survive not only the most stubborn leftovers in your fridge but also the next 1,375 U.S. presidents 😅
