Did You Know…Ancient Monuments were Built Specifically for The Solstice???
The winter solstice is in two days!
The winter solstice occurs when the path of the sun is the furthest from the sun in the Northern Hemisphere.
To us, this celestial event might be nothing short of a seasonal change. But ancient civilizations celebrated the shortest day and longest night of the year with more intentionality. It represented something deeper. It meant renewal and rebirth to them.
Ancient structures and altars were built to honor this event and celebrate its significance.
But more than the phenomenon itself, it’s the intentionality of the designs of the monuments that fills me with awe. Besides the beauty of the buildings, much kudos to the builders of old who were so meticulous and creative. The structures align with the sun during the solstice.
What technology did they apply that still makes their art very significant even in this day and age?
Structures across Europe testify to the significance of these altars. An example is Stonehenge, England. On the winter solstice, the setting of the sun aligns perfectly with its central altar stone and the Heel Stone.
There are more such settings around the world, showing the greatness of designs from generations past.
