Did You Know…Mount Everest ‘Grows’ Annually???
I should have paid more attention in class
First I learned that the Eiffel Tower ‘grows’ 6 inches taller in summer and now this?
Are you telling me something as rigid as a mountain is constantly in motion? Does this affect my understanding of non-living things? Yes. Yes, it does.
I can’t go into details because I’m still trying to wrap my head around it but the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, grows annually between 0.16 and 0.53 millimeters. The New York Times calls the yearly growth “the width of a strand of spaghetti.” That’s a tiny spurt, but over the last 89,000 years, that tiny spurt has accumulated to an extra 15 to 50 meters according to The Guardian.
While I’m surprised by this information, the marvel in it is the realization that nature is constantly teaching us to have a growth mindset.
Everest reminds us that It’s not enough to be good, we have to constantly update our minds to remain relevant in a constantly changing world.
And if you wonder, “Why fix what’s not broken?” there’s another lesson here: the power of the compound effect. Whether in finance, relationships, or personal development, little actions count. Something might be ‘harmless’ in bites but colossal when it accumulates over time.
What’s your biggest life lesson from nature? I’d love to hear about it.
