Did you know…Trick-or-treating Wasn’t Always About Candy?

Evolution isn’t a concept limited to science. Customs and traditions evolve too as is the case with Halloween, the second most celebrated holiday after Christmas.
In medieval times, a common practice across Europe called Souling took place on All Hallows’ Day (October 31st) and All Souls’ Day (November 1st). Poor folks went knocking on the doors of wealthier families. In exchange for treats called soul cakes, they would offer prayers for the homeowners’ deceased loved ones. Hmmm…Sounds like Halloween all right!

With time, the tradition experienced a shift with kids dressed up in costumes to earn rewards for performing songs or jokes. Way to earn a keep? LOL.

Soon the tradition crossed the borders of America as immigrants from Ireland and Scotland settled there. By the mid-20th century, candy became the currency of trick-or-treating. Now kids get free candy for the sake of dressing up alone.
It’s fascinating how customs and traditions change with time given the circumstances of the society they are practiced in.
I wonder what Halloween would look like in another 20 years. Maybe homeowners will get candy instead. What do you think?
