Did You Know…Two Towns With an Extraordinary Marketing Strategy???
Welcome to Dull and Boring!
Few things precede you apart from your reputation, e.g., your name. In many cultures around the world, a name is a deciding factor in how others perceive you.
For instance, seeing a nameplate that reads, “Joy Summers” might make you think of a warm, bright, and likable personality. It doesn’t matter if they turn out to be the most unattractive person you ever met. The name already gave them a foot in.
But what happens if it’s the other way around? Would you like to visit a place called Dull or spend winter in the town of Boring?
Yet, these places exist! And tourists are going there. How?
Dull, a rural village in Perthshire, Scotland had about 80 residents. Boring, a slightly bigger town in Oregon, USA, had 8,000. They were just two dots on the map until a twist of fate created an incredible connection.
Elizabeth Leighton, was on a circling trip in Dull when a very fun thought came to her. Her friend’s hometown, Boring, in Oregon, USA has the same vibe as Dull. They both have a laid-back vibe and very peculiar names too. Why not link the two towns?
The town planners thought it was a great idea and went for it.
In 2012 both towns embraced the peculiarity of their names and became twin towns, making them the next tourist attraction!
This strategy boosted tourism for both towns. A day was established to celebrate the bond called Dull and Boring Day.
Fun fact; It’s anything but dull and boring. It’s so fun I read somewhere that a third town called Bland in Australia got in on the action.
Look here, what you think is a disadvantage might just be a unique gift if embraced with creativity and confidence.
