Did You Know…What Is the Largest Seed on Earth?
It’s Even Bigger Than a Basketball
When we think of seeds, it usually gives an impression of something really small, isn't it?
Then let me tell you about - Coco de Mer seed. It is the Earth’s largest seed. It is truly heavyweight as, it scales up to 66pounds(30 kg).
They are native to the Seychelles islands of East Africa. This seed grows on the Lodoicea palm tree and can reach over 12 inches in length.
It has a unique double-lobed shape that looks quite funny. Honestly, if it's shape is to be described, it looks exactly like buttocks.
But just in case if you are planning to grow one in your backyard, then let me tell you, the Coco de Mer only grows on two islands and takes about years to germinate. It's natural habitat is currently under threat, so it's now a protected symbol of conservation in the Seychelles.
