We’re starting a book club! Read “The Dispossessed” with us!

First up: a true sci-fi masterpiece, written almost 50 years ago, still as relevant as ever.

Hey everyone, we have exciting news to share: We’re starting a book club! Because reading is even more fun when you have others to discuss the stories with and a little commitment always helps to stay on track! Also we all read too much social media and not enough books these days, don’t we?

So when Jonathan brought a tattered copy of Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Dispossessed” to the office, I instantly felt compelled to join him and read it, too.

That cover. 🤤

Here’s Jonathan convincing you of the story:

The Dispossessed (“Freie Geister”) is a 1974 utopian sci-fi novel by Ursula Le Guin. It follows the story of Shevek who leaves the barren wasteland he calls home for the planet his people fled 200 years ago — a planet, whose society bears striking similarity to late-capitalism. Alien to this world, the protagonist struggles to put his experiences into words, uncovering many of the paradoxes and idiosyncrasies of the contemporary condition.
Le Guin wrote the dispossessed almost half a century ago, yet many of the questions she raises, remain unanswered to this day.
If you feel like exploring the present through the eyes of one of sci-fi’s most prolific writers, we’d be glad to have you onboard.

Sounds good, right?

Here’s how it works: Each month we pick a book to read together and roughly four weeks later we meet in our office in Kreuzberg and discuss it over a beverage of everyone’s choice. Simple enough. So pick up a copy (Amazon paperback / Amazon Kindle / Dussmann if you’re in Berlin) and show your commitment on our Facebook event for the discussion on the 13th of September:

If you don’t have Facebook, no worries, just tell us on some other channel that you’re coming. 🙌

Depending on who is joining we might have the discussion in German or English or both, and at the end of the evening we’ll pick the next book together. Happy reading! 🤓

This could be me reading during my lunch break (I’m actually on a Skype call here, but it’s the only photo I could find).
And here’s Jonathan excitedly researching the many German translations of “The Dispossessed”.

We’d be delighted to see you on Sept. 13th! 👏
