Getting accustomed to the ‘new normal’ is forcing people to find new inventive ways to carry out their daily routines, including exercise. Close to no physical activity can be tough for people like us who crave for a good kick of energy burst for a better physical and mental well-being.

But this is not the time to quit. In fact, a little improv and ingenuity can help you get an equally gym worthy & rewarding workout. It’s more about maintenance and making regular exercise a priority to reap it’s benefits. Here are 5 Creative ways to get in shape with home workouts-

1. Make the most of game-time

All work and no play makes Jack (or anyone) a dull boy, isn’t it? A designated play time is an easy way to squeeze in some physical activity in your day without feeling it like a ‘planned’ workout session. Frisbee's, hula-hoops, dancing & playing catch with children, house-hold chores and yard work are some example exercises to get you moving!

2. Use your body weight

You don’t have to break your bank in order to set up a home gym with equipment. Squats, push-ups, lunges and crunches, planks, back extensions etc can be done using your own body weight.

3. Improvise on resistance

Home essentials are not only easily available but perfectly serve the purpose of a good workout- empty bottles/jugs/paint cans(preferably more than 1l filled with water or any liquid), backpack filled with books or stuff, soccer ball, sandbags or duffel bags filled with quilt/ blankets or potato sacks can be used instead of weights and resistance bands. A chair can also be a great tool to try variations of exercises to build up your strength and stamina.

4. Use technology to bring a power packed workout to your home

Online streaming is the thing now. Ranging from YouTube channels and Netflix streams, digital media allows you to get access to the best workout routines. They can be fun and a great way to keep your blood rushing. You can even try something which seems out of your comfort zone, maybe a zumba, yoga or a pilates session? It’s completely okay to feel weird and awkward in the first go and it’s only when you go through the process multiple times, is when you start to like it.

5. Find a workout buddy

Why not catch up with your friends over a brisk walk instead of a fancy dinner? A workout buddy will help you stay motivated and keep you going even if you lose sight of your health goal. Involve your kids in your workout and spend dedicated playtime with them. They’re full of energy and an hour of good playtime is nothing less than a cardio session.

While you try your best to get and stay in shape, it is important to note that exercise cannot undo a bad diet and therefore it is equally important to eat healthy as well despite the amount of exercise you do.

There you go! So what are you waiting for? Off the couch and on the ground!
