Book Review — A Time for Mercy by John Grisham
I read this book partly while on vacation in the Bahamas. It was the perfect beach read although the book tackles some weighty subjects:
- what is justice
- death penalty
- a messy and connected world of poverty, broken relationships, and the criminal justice system
It follows the story of a small town lawyer (Jake Brigance) in Mississippi tasked with representing a minor who committed murder. Like many tragic stories there’s no real pathway for vindication from victim to perpetrator. A horrible crime was committed and Jake Brigance is tasked with providing the best outcome for his client.
The book resonated with and brought back memories of Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy and the work of the Equal Justice Initiative.
I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for another thrilling read by John Grisham.
