I’ve Made 10 Trillion Huge Mistakes That Caused Perpetual Diarrhea (then I got 28.7% better)
Chronic diarrhea is one of the trickiest digestive conditions to fix. And it can completely ruin your life.
I know this because when my diarrhea was at its worst (IBS-D), I would spend 4+ hours imprisoned in the bathroom and chained to the toilet.

But I didn’t have 4+ hours of diarrhea every day — so I had to figure out what mistakes I was making that turned my ass into a fire hose.
As a trained experimental physicist, when you encounter any problem, you try and collect data to understand the exact nature of the problem. Here’s how my diarrhea episodes look like in from February 1st until May 31st 2009:

In mid-February 2009, I showed some data to 2 gastroenterologists, and got a colonoscopy — and 2 doctors gave me a diagnosis of IBS-D. They told me that my colonoscopies didn’t show anything wrong with me, and then immediately told me that it was all in my head.
After all, I looked healthy and was young (25 years old)…so now I had chronic diarrhea, and I’ve been diagnosed a crazy person! Great!

I was pretty sure I wasn’t crazy, so I started trying stuff…
Getting A Little Better Means Tons of Hope
I went over to the health food store and started browsing the supplement isle. The hippie vitamin lady told me that probiotics were this great new thing for digestion (this was back in 2009). And she was right.

Within 10 days of taking the probiotics, I could tell I felt much better. My worst days of diarrhea sessions were about 1.36 hours shorter. And comparing the 2 months on probiotics vs. the previous 2 months, I had a 27.8% shorter average time on the toilet.
Even though I was only 27.8% better — I was filled with hope and felt like this:

I knew I could use data on my own habits to improve my digestion.
You’re Only 10% Human
So the10 trillion mistakes I made were not respecting the 10 trillion probiotic cells in our body (compared to only 1 trillion human cells in our body).
Late in 2008 I had taken antibiotics to kill a parasite I caught living in Taiwan. Looking back that seemed to be when my digestive issues started getting worse and worse.
Since probiotics are HEAVILY involved in our digestion (and immunity, allergies, blood pressure, etc), it makes sense that modifying my body’s probiotics (and taking antibiotics) could have a strong effect on my diarrhea episodes.
Today, My Digestion Is Back to 99%
Probiotics were the first thing I found to help — but there were many more lifestyle and dietary factors that had a strong effect on my digestion.
