This week, The DIGIPHARM team attended the flagship event for The Life Sciences Hub in Wales. Specifically, myself, Dr. Hasham Al-Meshhedani and my colleague Dr. Rami Radwan attended and participated in the conversation, representing DIGIPHARM. The take home message is that Wales is renewing its commitment to innovation, especially in the area of digital health. The timing of this event was perfect as this week is the 70th anniversary of our beloved National Health Service.

Aneurin Bevan

We in the UK are incredibly proud of our health service. This is especially the case in Wales, where we are also proud to say that Aneurin Bevan, the founding father of the NHS, was born and raised here. At the time when he established the national health service he wanted a service that was free-to-all at the point of need, regardless of wealth. He was being a brave and bold innovator that would not be defeated.

Over time, the NHS has grown to be the magnificent institution that we know it to be today and a world leader in healthcare. However, as healthcare costs are rising exponentially, the NHS is being stretched more and more by tight budgets and in some areas being starved to breaking point. We need to create an environment that will nurture innovative ideas and help to bring them to fruition. It will be through innovation and collaboration that the NHS can continue to be a leader in healthcare despite the current financial constraints. This is the environment that is being created in Wales and it fills us with excitement that we at Digipharm are positioning ourselves to be just what the NHS needs to move forward in digital health innovation through the provision of value-based healthcare.

We believe that if Aneurin Bevan was alive today, he would be striving hard to rebalance the consequences of spiralling healthcare costs and privatisation. He would become a true advocate for the provision of value-based healthcare and insist that we pay a fair price for good outcomes and curb the payments for interventions that have poor outcomes.

In essence, the provision of value-based healthcare, with emphasis on patient outcomes, will bring power back to the hands of the patients and will ensure a fair deal for all.
