Within the domain of combustion plants we have developed the X4FIRE solution, along the entire supply chain: from the storage or the point of availability of the fuel, up to the control of combustion exhaust gases, passing through a precise monitoring and optimization of the combustion process.

DIG:ITA, through X4FIRE partners, is reinventing the technical solution for the combustion systems industry as we know it thanks to intelligent technologies and the connection between human and digital workforce.

Through X4FIRE pool, we can deliver solutions for combustion systems industry assets across 25+ OEM brands: a network of technological providers, for fuel sotrage, fuel dosing & combustion (including alternative fules) and emissions control.

One of the main challenges of the X4FIRE project is to standardize the management and optimization of the combustion process along all its components: from storage, i.e. from the point of availability of the fuel, to the control of combustion exhaust gases, passing through precise monitoring and optimization of the actual combustion process.

Normally each macro component is made by different technical and technological suppliers:

  • the supplier of the fuel storage plant (think for example of solid fuel storage silos, i.e. storage tanks for gaseous or liquid fuels);
  • the supplier of the dosing and combustion plant;
  • the supplier of the combustion flue gas management systems.

Each component is normally also managed:

  • by different and not interconnected control software (PLC) and monitoring software (SCADA-HMI), without a complete plant mapping;
  • by different types of data not connected to each other;
  • from data not always available in digital form

The innovation of the X4FIRE solution lies in the creation of a single DIGITAL-TWIN, a single digital image of the complete system, harmonizing the data coming from the field and each component within a single database while creating a man-machine and machine-machine communication platform.

The X4FIRE project is divided into three main phases:

X4FIRE Fuel storage plant
  • First of all, the internal combustion plant has been mapped in all its components grouped in three macro-sections: Fuel storage plant;
    Combustion plant itself; Plant for the management of the exhaust fumes of combustion;
  • A single hardware and software architecture has been created to collect all the field data within a single database, asynchronous to the operation of the plant itself, containing all the big data, and constantly synchronized in the Cloud.

  • The data thus standardized were then broken down into classes of cross-sectional information: Analog and digital alarms & events; Process/cycle data;
  • Finally, classes of analytics were identified, both ex-post and predictive, through machine learning systems;

These outcomes have allowed to be addressed to human and digital workforce according to the exact space-time needs in order to:

  • optimize the fuel supply and storage system,
    highlighting “safe” times & zones to increase safety during loading/unloading procedures
  • Optimize the energy efficiency of fuel use in the reference process
  • Continuously monitor exhaust gas emissions into the atmosphere
