EDC 534 Final Project Thoughts

I will start with the disclaimer that is visible in the thumbnail for my video above.
“This project is my own personal interpretation of the guidance I reviewed, and does not represent the U.S. Government, DoD, DoN or USNWC.”
This project was incredibly valuable to me as a person, and I hope it will be valuable to the Navy and the DoD in general. The purpose of the project was to try to incorporate the multiple layers of guidance for protecting, labeling, using and publishing information in a comprehensive format. The different guidance that exists for the various types of data that we use in the military is important for the protection of our forces, and members and their families. We also need to follow the law and capitalize on the opportunities to tell our story.
I learned an incredible amount of information while completing this project both in the understanding of the guidance I am expected to follow and in my personal understanding of Media Literacy and the challenges and concerns of publication in general.
One of the goals I set for myself at the beginning of this course was to expand my comfort with digital publishing, and to try to bring that comfort into the military classroom. I have definitely expanded my understanding of the constraints and restraints on digital publishing so I am more comfortable with it. At the same time during this particular project, I found myself repeatedly modifying what I was creating, to ensure that I stayed within the requirements that I was exploring in the project. This ultimately lengthened my timeline beyond what I had planned. At one point, I considered scrapping the entire project and starting something new at the last minute.
In addition to the Pecha Kucha linked above, I have created a lesson plan and slide presentation along with examples of what students might create while completing the lesson I put together. The main effort of the project is represented by the flowchart for deciding whether to publish a media project or not. As I point out in the video, this is by no means complete, and tomorrow (or immediately after I publish this article) I will undoubtedly find something that I wish I had included. I want to expand my digital publishing footprint, which means I needed to understand, what I can/can’t/must/must not do in the various roles in which I live my life.
