What is a digital biomarker?

‘Biomarkers’ are biological markers of health outcomes (i.e. diseases, conditions, or health/wellness). Digital biomarkers are biomarkers that are collected digitally from a variety of sensors (i.e. mobile phones, wearables, a bathroom scale) and transformed into indicators of health outcomes using computational methods[1]. Digital biomarkers can be leveraged to provide biomedical insights and improve health care decision-making. An example of a digital biomarker is glucose variability, which can be calculated using data from continuous glucose monitors and gives information about an individual’s glucose health, which can be used to encourage healthy lifestyle changes to improve glucose health and reduce the effects of diseases affected by glucose health, like diabetes.

There is ongoing research in digital biomarkers that spans fields and disease states, from movement-related disorders[2] to breast cancer[3] to Alzheimer’s disease[4], and digital biomarkers can be applied to any area of health, wellness, and medicine.

What are some of the challenges in digital biomarker research?
