Are You A Business-Minded Content Creator? Just Try This!
Creating content is something that I always assumed was for marketers, those in media and creative types such as musicians, artists and storytellers. Back in 2013 a friend of mine in marketing told me that I should start creating content and tell my story and start my own YouTube channel. My first thought which I’m guessing is the thoughts of many reading this today was, who the hell would want to hear my story, I don’t consider myself an expert in anything and I’m not the creative type and creating content has nothing to do with my job as a manager in my startup.
Fast forward 6 years later and I 100% consider myself a content creator and can without question link my creation of content to my business success across every aspect of my business. But I’m not creating marketing content or sales content or entertainment content with the goal of going viral rather I tell stories, share my experiences and try to educate my community on topics that I’m passionate about.
All of the content I create is linked to growing my business but as I said previously it’s not your traditional marketing or sales content and for me my content lightbulb happened after reading two books: Jay Baer YouTility and Gary Vaynerchuk Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook.
Since first embracing the concept of creating content in the fall of 2013 I’ve now done over 3k live videos, 500+ interviews, currently host 3 podcasts, have written blogs for brands such as Adobe, Dell, IBM and Oracle while also blogging weekly on my site www.isocialfanz.com.
Not only has content creation changed my business but it’s now my mission and focus as I firmly believe everyone has a story to tell and the book I’m currently writing titled Press The Damn Button is focused on telling stories, standing out from the noise and building community. Now there are different ways to tell stories as well as different motivations for creating content and when you’re defining the ROI and building a content strategy one of the elements that I often struggled with was most that identify as a creator are creative types with a talent or skill with the goal of going viral or growing massive subscriber list.
For all the content I’ve created over the last 6 years my goal was similar to what I do on stage today as a professional speaker which is to inspire, educate and motivate the audience focused on translating the geek-speak around digital marketing, social media, personal branding and emerging technology. My goals are often linked to getting my content in front of the right audience, increasing search engine discovery of my website and conveying thought leadership level insights to inspire a client to hire me. A couple years ago I was being introduced on stage and they referred to me as a “business-minded content creator” and the light bulb went off for me.
With that being said there is limited content and strategy available for today’s business-minded content creators not to mention advice coming from those that aren’t famous or billionaire CEO’s or celebrities. With this in mind I teamed up with good friend who is one of my favorite business minded content creators on YouTube Amy Schmittauer Landino to launch a new show focused just for the business-minded creator. This new show launched in Feb 2019 titled Just Try This!
JUST TRY THIS PODCAST is a weekly show where we have a conversation and share experiences around a specific topic giving the audience “fly on the wall” access to Amy and I while providing actionable insights and even weekly homework for our listeners!
What I believe you’ll discover listening to this show is that yes Amy and I share similar passions and our success has been mirrored in many ways over the years but we’ve both approached our content and businesses differently and our goal for each episode was to focus on sharing insights and lessons learned that we both wished we had when we started out.
