Tuesday morning, Speaker Pelosi led a Congressional tribute to fallen U.S. Capitol Police Officer William ‘Billy’ F. Evans as he lay in honor in the Capitol Rotunda. She was joined by President Biden, Members of the Congressional Leadership, District of Columbia Mayor Bowser, the family of Officer Evans, and members of the U.S. Capitol Police force. A ceremonial departure followed that evening. On Wednesday morning, Speaker Pelosi spoke at the unveiling of a new memorial on the National Mall honoring the 40,000 lives lost each year to gun violence, organized by Giffords Courage. Later that day, Speaker Pelosi also held a ceremonial swearing-in for Representative Julia Letlow, who won a special election in March to fill the seat of her late husband, Luke, who was elected last year but died due to complications to COVID-19 before he could enter office. Thursday, Madam Speaker held her weekly press conference in the United States Capitol in the morning, where she highlighted the lifesaving impact of the American Rescue Plan and emphasized the urgent need to pass the American Jobs Plan. Later that afternoon, she joined her Congressional colleagues to celebrate the passage of H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act, which marks important progress to close the gender wage gap and secure equal pay for equal work.
