Embassies and ambassadors on Medium

Diplomats are embracing the platform and the opportunities it offers.

Following up on my recent post on how many world leaders are on Medium, here’s a look at how the diplomatic community in Washington DC has embraced the platform and how many US embassies around the world are active.

As for previous posts, the following list is not exhaustive and is limited to the US market (foreign embassies and ambassadors in Washington DC, UN missions and representatives in New York, and US embassies around the world). It shows however the role of Medium in the foreign policy and diplomatic community and how different entities are experimenting with the platform, whether it’s for digital campaigns, oped-style posts, long-form and multimedia content.

🌍 FOREIGN EMBASSIES IN WASHINGTON DC

The number of foreign embassies in the US capital that have established a presence on Medium, whether active or not, is growing tremendously. This has also translated into an increase of articles and features posted, while experimenting on content, including photos, videos, and embeds.

🇺🇳 U.N. MISSIONS AND AMBASSADORS IN NEW YORK

While the presence on Medium of the diplomatic community in Washington DC is solidifying, at the United Nations the situation is much different. Of the few U.N. missions and ambassadors in New York, it appears that only the United Kingdom is active on the platform, with its mission UKUN_NewYork and its permanent representative, Ambassador Matthew Rycroft (for whom a second account is also active: Matthew Rycroft).

For now also EU Delegation to UN, La France à l'ONU, and Italy UN New York are on the platform but not active yet. Former permanent representatives are also on the platform, including Ambassador stefan tafrov of Bulgaria, and Ambassador Samantha Power of the United States.
