Regardless of the area of expertise, AI most definitely is a hot topic. In the art world, it can be difficult to see the positive aspect it can bring.

During the last couple of weeks, I have had the pleasure of enjoying Paris over the summer and going to a couple of exhibitions. If, like me, you have time to spare and are currently based in the city of love check them out! Before we dive into the subject of AI, let me give you a couple of recommendations of exhibitions you must see that got me thinking about this.

I have had the chance to be mesmerized by Ron Mueck at la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain.

“Mass” by Ron Mueck

He is a contemporary Australian sculptor known for his hyper-realistic, lifelike sculptures of human figures. During his lifetime, he produced about 48 creations, which could not be considered a lot, but when you look at his work, you understand why. His incredible attention to detail and the emotional depth he brings to his creations are very unique.

His works often play with scale, presenting figures that are either dramatically larger or smaller than life-size, which enhances their impact and invites viewers to question their perception of reality I have no doubt you would get out of there feeling some type of way, his extraordinary technical skill will leave you breathless.

Another exhibition I would highly recommend is the “Basquiat x Warhol, à quatre mains” at the Louis Vuitton Foundation.

My love for Basquiat does not leave me unbiased here, but the collaboration between Basquiat and Warhol was a significant moment in the art world. This exhibit is very unique as it showcases exclusive work they created together and lets you dive into the worlds and minds of these two geniuses.

The relationship between Basquiat and Warhol was complex. On one hand, Basquiat idolized Warhol and saw him as a mentor and father figure. Warhol, on the other hand, saw Basquiat as a protégé and admired his artistic authenticity.

So, if you are an art enthusiast, it is a captivating experience to get a glimpse into the creative exchange of the artists.

All this got me wondering, where does art stand today and what are the possibilities presented by the digital age we live in?

The ever-evolving nature of art and the influence of artificial intelligence on our current world can bring new possibilities but also concerns.

Artificial Intelligence has revolutionized the art world by providing artists with tools that augment their creative capabilities. AI-generated artworks, created through algorithms and machine learning, have pushed the boundaries of what is deemed possible in artistic expression. By feeding AI systems with vast datasets, almost anyone can produce.

At its current stage of development, I believe artificial intelligence is more of a tool to augment human creativity rather than a pure replacement. AI can assist artists by automating repetitive tasks and can provide inspiration as they can focus on more innovative and conceptual aspects of their work.

One thing is for sure, artificial intelligence lacks emotional depth and the ability to create original art with authentic human feelings and experiences that drive the artistic process.

That being said, it could produce visually striking works, but it still faces challenges in replicating the full range of human creativity, emotions, and perspectives as seen in the graphics created by my prompts. The true impact of AI on the art world will likely be seen in how it complements and interacts with human creativity, rather than attempting to directly replace it.

Artists like Ron Mueck, Basquiat, and Warhol have created masterpieces that resonate with audiences on multiple levels, evoking emotions, capturing societal themes, and showcasing technical prowess, which AI cannot do as it relies solely on algorithms and datasets to produce its output.

Embracing AI as a collaborator rather than a competitor could lead to exciting possibilities. Let’s not forget that AI algorithms learn from the data they are fed, artificial intelligence is only artificial because it needs a human to do the work!
