Some 12 to 15 million people left their homes across one side of a new border in the erstwhile British province of India in August 1947 and moved to the other.
Depending on their religion, people went in different directions: Muslims and Sikhs split out from Hindus and Sikhs. Along the way, approximately one million people perished, and many of them met violent deaths. It turns out to be a terrifying day of Muslim and Hindu fighting. Almost 10,000 people are hurt, and at least 4,000 people are dead. It was one of the massive migrations and brutal massacres witnessed.
