Berlin: What’s the flag of North Korea doing atop a central Berlin building?
At first I thought I’d seen the flag wrong, but I hadn’t. That got me digging.
Berlin can throw many curveballs at the unassuming traveller. But sometimes, it’s even the residents that are left their head scratching.
I’m still fairly new to the city, having moved here in 2021. So it’s safe to say that I’m somewhere between the clueless traveller and an informed resident. But there are times when I have to ask myself, do I really know enough about the city?
Last year, I’d have to travel to the centre of Berlin a few times a week for work. On my lunch breaks, I’d wander around empty streets near the Museum of Communication. It’s an uninspiring part of Berlin, filled mostly with office buildings.
One building would always intrigue me, despite not being much to look at. It had the flag of the Hermit Kingdom, aka North Korea atop it.
Now, I’m no Sheldon Cooper when it comes to identifying flags, but I can guess the flag of North Korea.
It got me wondering, is this really the Embassy of North Korea?
