Chasing Northern Lights in Yellowknife
Exploring the Aurora Capital of the World
On our mission to chase the Aurora Borealis all over the world, we decided to explore the best destinations in Canada. We went to Whitehorse & Yellowknife on our trip last year. You can read about our Whitehorse adventure here. In this blog I will cover our Yellowknife itinerary.
Yellowknife is the capital city of Canada’s Northwest Territories. It sits on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, the ninth-largest lake in the world, and the deepest recorded lake in North America. Without a doubt, Yellowknife was one of the most remote and coldest places we’ve ever been.
Why Yellowknife for Northern Lights?
Yellowknife is one of the best locations in North America for aurora viewing. In fact it is widely known as the “Aurora Capital of the World”.
Did you know? It has an average of 240 aurora viewing nights per year.
Its prime location within the aurora belt (a band around Earth’s magnetic poles where auroras are most frequently and intensely visible), combined with surprisingly dry weather, makes it an exceptional destination for aurora viewing.
