Conqueror of Nations: Alexander the Great in History
Alexander the Great, also known as Alexander III is known as one of the greatest conquerors in history.
Alexander was born in 356 B.C. in Pella (present-day northern Greece) Macedonia, to King Philip II. As a young boy, he was taught to read, write, and play Lyre.
When he was 13 years old, his father hired Aristotle to be his private tutor. Aristotle taught him for three years though very little is known about Alexander’s three-year tutelage.
When he was 16, his father Philip went off to a battle leaving his son in charge of Macedonia, In 338 B.C., during the Battle of Chaeronea, Alexander saw the opportunity to prove his worth and took his cavalry to fight against the Sacred Band of Thebes and destroyed the Sacred Band of Thebes.
In 336 B.C., Alexander’s father Philip was assassinated by his bodyguard, Pausanias. Merely 20 years old, Alexander claimed the throne and killed his rivals that could threaten his position.
