Cadenela Organic Olive Oil — Vodnjan, Croatia

As I walk through the orchards, I can feel the breeze of the salty Adriatic close by, the dirt is rich and red and Andrea and I walk by the Roman walls 2,000 years old. Andrea and his family have been producing oil here for generations, he’s full of light, love, and life, much like the oil produced from his orchards. This isn’t some estate in the hills of Tuscany or an orchard in Greece, this is Croatia. A country with beautiful and magical secrets, secrets that locals don’t think are secrets but I’m sure a few don’t mind them staying that way.

When people hear Croatia they usually envision grainy early 90’s videos of fighting among Eastern Bloc housing as locals flee. What they should see is 1,200 miles of amazing mainland coastline, dotted with another 1,200 island retreats that are all surrounded by the incredible picturesque waters of the Adriatic. Filled with some of the kindest, most fun-loving people in the world who enjoy their families, their outdoors, and most importantly their food. Food, like almost every ancient culture, is at the epicenter of the social DNA that makes up Croatia and her people. And the one strand of that DNA that seems as if it's older than time is olive oil.
