From afar, Icaria resembles any other place on the Greek coast, a wild, rocky island embraced by a turquoise-colored sea, but this mythical island hides many mysteries, a rich history dating back to Antiquity, and it is also home to many natural wonders.

Unlike other Greek islands, it is not its stunning scenery, white sandy beaches, or turquoise waters that made it famous. In fact, the iconic blue and white houses that so generously decorate the rest of the country’s coastline shine with their absence here.

This ancient island testifies to a much more brutal past, and in the blue dusk when everything else is dark across the wind-swept Aegean Sea, and Icaria looks abandoned, black and lifeless, the only existing lights originate from the small silvery stars that fill the vaulted dark blue sky and their delicate reflections in the black waters.

In the absence of light, Icaria’s peaks rising from the narrow strip of rocky shore seem to have taken an eerie life of their own. This rugged island is encircled by a violent and turbulent sea; together with its own harsh, rough topography, they make out both its blessings and its curse.
