A surprising city

Touted as the leather capitol of the world, Leon, Guanajuato is also Mexico’s fourth largest city. Wikipedia lists its population as 1,579,803 compared to Montreal, Canada’s 1,762,949. That was my first surprise.

I live in Zihuatanejo, Mexico (population 124,609). It’s a quiet fishing village blessed by lovely beaches. What’s missing for many of the expats that live here are cultural events to break the tedium of endless days at the beach.

Exploring Leon I found a lovely park area devoted to cultural activities.

Looking down the esplanade, to the left is the museum of art and history with a dramatic sculpture at the entrance depicting an indigenous chief bound and pierced by wounds of European slavery.

To the right is the library and further down a large symphony hall, Imax cinema, and theatre for plays and such. Operas are shown direct from the Met on the Imax screen. That probably is a better view than I would get in the nosebleed section at the met if I…
