There is so much more than the capital city of any country. Yet, when travelling, most people usually prefer to visit the crowded capitals, especially in the summer.
Even though Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is far from a crowded city at any time of the year, that’s all people can think of when adventuring into the Nordic country, land of Nokia, Moomin, saunas, lakes, forests, and Santa Claus.
Tampere: the Manchester of the North
In the 18th century, Tampere emerged as a significant source of hydropower. The city, which back then belonged to the Swedish realm, was established in 1779 by decision of King Gustav III of Sweden.
Today, Tampere is the most populous city in the Nordic countries and it’s usually called the Manchester of the North.
The south-central Finnish city is mostly known for its many public saunas, the only Moomin Museum in the world, and its long-spanning industrial history that is visible in the city’s architecture.
