My Nevis Swing Adventure
A Leap of Faith and a Lot of Adrenaline!
In December of 2022, me and my husband, Antriksh did a cross country trip to New Zealand. The trip was incredible! I absolutely fell in love with New Zealand.
Besides the gorgeous scenery & amazing hikes, New Zealand is known for its crazy extreme sports. In fact Queenstown, a city in New Zealand is considered “The Adventure Capital of the World”
Though, I’m not exactly known for my thrill-seeking. But my adventurous husband somehow talked me into the Nevis Swing, one of the biggest swings in the world with a 300m arc. This swing is operated by AJ Hackett Bungy.
AJ Hackett was the guy who started the first commercial bungee jumping spot back in 1988. He did it at the Kawarau Bridge in New Zealand, and you can still jump there today!
Usually, I prefer to be safe in my comfort zone. The thought of swinging hundreds of feet above a canyon wasn’t exactly something I would ever imagine to do on the New Zealand trip. Antriksh, on the other hand, was so excited about it.
After checking in at AJ Hackett office and completing the necessary paperwork, we hopped on the bus that would take us to the facility. You have to take a bus because the jumping site is on a private land. It’s about a 40-minute ride. The bus driver gave us a really good pep talk and played some awesome music to get us pumped. But even though I was trying to stay positive, my mind kept going crazy, imagining all the things that could go wrong.
The views on the way up were amazing.
Once we reached the top, we were strapped into harness and were asked to sit there, all buckled in until our turn comes. Our turn finally came and we were asked to walk over to the platform. The view from the platform was incredible, but it didn’t calm my nerves at all.
Finally, the moment had arrived. We were buckled into the swing harness. We were sitting there, feet still on the platform, heart pounding!!
Then, whoosh! They lift you up, and your feet are just hanging there. You look down, and it’s like you’re floating above the canyon — it’s insane!
We splurged and bought the pictures and videos package as it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and we wanted to have something to remember it by. If you take the package, the crew will also ask you to pose for different cameras installed at the station.
Highly recommend taking the package if your budget allows so!
To make things more exciting, the crew asks if you want a surprise launch or if you want to count down. My adventurous husband chose the surprise launch!
And just like that, we were launched into the void.
The free fall was terrifying, I’m not gonna lie!
At first, I was totally freaked out. But then, as we started swinging faster and faster, the adrenaline hit me. It was totally wild, something I never thought I’d actually do!
By the time the swing stopped, I was totally pumped! I actually did it! It was a truly unforgettable experience, a reminder that stepping outside our comfort zones, even if it scares us, can lead to incredible things.
Every time I watch the video, I relive this crazy adventure! Who knew I could be a thrill-seeker?
Thanks, Antriksh, for pushing me out of my comfort zone.
