Our New Power Generator is Better Than We Could’ve Expected

When one door slams shut, another one blows wide open

Out with the old, in with the new

It couldn’t have come at a worse time to have our old generator go out. We had to go nearly two weeks on it before we could replace it. Those last days on the old generator honestly worried me greatly. I didn’t know if or when it would just go out or worse. I’m happy none of that happened and whatever fix my partner did on it to get us to payday was a wonder.

The new generator is a Predator 4550 Inverter Generator. It feels like our old one stopped working so we could upgrade to this amazing one for only $550 after taking a $50 coupon off of it from Harbor Freight with a digital coupon. There are so many things about this new generator that is so much better than the old one.

Higher gas capacity and running a load on it until the first oil change

The gas tank on it is 3.7 gallons. That is almost 4 times the capacity of our old one. We would’ve been lucky to get 8 hours of power on the old generator. This one went for 18 hours yesterday before we decided to stop waiting for it to run out of gas and turned it off ourselves. We had to sleep after all. We had been up for over a day running it to see what it was capable of. The whole time we were running it yesterday, my partner was running a game on his computer for about 14 hours and it stayed full.

I could’ve probably written yesterday but I was distracted by the power generated by the generator and also by the interesting story game my partner was playing. I needed the rest anyway. I had written every day this month up to that point. The instructions had previously told us to run the generator for 30 hours and then give it an oil change before running it at full power. First of all, I thought 30 hours would take longer than the 48-hour window we had run it.

We made that number just two days after we bought it.

Running even better after the oil change and handling a large load

The oil change was done when we woke up from a long night’s (day of) sleep. Now with the oil change done and the first 30 hours run, we now have two chargers plugged into the generator. We are charging the batteries right now at 120 amps. This would’ve been unheard of at all with our old generator. We used to run it at about 60 amps.

This new generator is handling the load well. It’s allowing us now to run our air conditioner and our computers. I’m also able to run my CPAP machine again off of the generator.

Excited to run this generator going forward and resuming our normal routine

We’ve even talked about baking and cooking in our oven again here. The new generator is giving us hope and we’re excited to start traveling with our new generator powering our tiny home.

We bought a rack and a hitch for it too. We’re going to put it on the rack and the hitch with bolts attached to the back of our home. I’ll be writing more stories from the road soon now that we have more than enough power to live comfortably going into spring and summer.
