When I lived in Porto, Portugal, for a few months, I looked for an interesting Run event with a little trip from Porto. Aveiro looks like an incredible city.

As part of the Maratona de Europa event series, the Half Marathon takes runners on a journey through the heart of Aveiro, allowing them to experience the city’s renowned canals, historic architecture, and the serene beauty of its coastal and rural surroundings. The course’s flat profile makes it a favorite among runners seeking to improve their half-marathon times or those looking to enjoy a manageable distance in a spectacular location. Participants are cheered on by supportive crowds and entertained by cultural performances along the route, enhancing the race day experience. Finishing the Maratona de Europa Half Marathon is an achievement celebrated with post-race festivities that embrace Aveiro’s rich heritage and vibrant community spirit, making it an unforgettable experience for all who take part.

Next Maratona de Europa Half Marathon will be on Apr 27, 2025.

My race that I will never forget

Actually, it was not my first half-marathon. However, it was the first time I wanted to leave the race. Why? Because the weather was so hot. And was not ready for that.
And, I made two mistakes:

  • I used a new sunscreen that was waterproof
  • The day before the race, I walked around the city, and it was more than 20 thousand steps

When people ask me what is the hardest part of long-distance running?
I always answer, “Negotiating with myself.”

The time spent preparing for the race and the race itself is not only physical but also moral training. You will learn about yourself!

When people ask me what is the hardest part of long-distance running?
I always answer, “Negotiating with myself.”

Yes, because you can’t fool yourself. You need to agree with yourself that you can run another 5, 10, or 15 kilometers. It’s so hard. You want to get off the Road so badly. But think about how happy you will be at the finish line that you have made it this far.

You will definitely be stronger!

At the finish line, Aurora Cunha met every runner and finished with them. It was something unbelievable. She is an incredible woman.

When you run in an unfamiliar tourist city, you enjoy the view, the tourists walking around, and the joy of running with like-minded people from other cities and countries just like you. The route was great and ran through the tourist part of the city and through the salt fields. Many people supported us on the course and it was very energizing, many offered water and local desserts.

Thе atmosphere is exciting and inspiring.

Of course, after I finished, I was so happy and surprised! After the finish, all participants received a bottle of champagne and a local dessert.

Maybe one day I will write an article about the top starter packs and finisher gifts at races 🤩

What do I recommend to visit?

  • Aveiro Muzeum
  • Ria de Aveiro
  • Aveiro Railway Station
  • Canal Central de Aveiro
  • The Aveiro Salines

Run, travel and enjoy! 😊
