The Taj Mahal is a building located in the city of Agra in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The Taj Mahal is situated on the right bank of the Yamuna River. The complex is spread over 42 acres (17 hectares), includes a mosque and a guest house, and is surrounded by a pillared wall on three sides. A building made entirely of white marble, the construction of the Taj Mahal was started by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1632 AD and was completed in 1648 AD. Even after being built in 1648, the remaining work of decoration of the Taj Mahal was completed in about 1653. It is a massive, white marble structure topped by an iwan (an arch-shaped gateway) and a large dome that stands on a square plinth.

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz, who died during childbirth. Since Mumtaz was Shahjahan’s most beloved wife Shahjahan was deeply saddened by her death.

If we talk about the architecture of the Taj Mahal, its example is given all over the world. Amazingly beautiful in every way, the Taj Mahal is also known for its architecture. The Taj Mahal incorporates and develops Indo-Islamic and older Mughal architectural design traditions. Ustad-Ahmed Lahori was the chief architect of the Taj Mahal. Architects were also called from Central Asia and Iran for the Taj Mahal, which included carvers, stone cutters, painters, calligraphers, and inlay artisans. The availability of various historical and Quranic inscriptions in Arabic script has assisted in determining the chronology of the Taj Mahal. About 20,000 artisans worked under the leadership and guidance of architect Ustad Ahmed Lahauri in the construction project.

The Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2007, it was declared the winner of the New 7 Wonders of the World (2000–2007) initiative.

The name of the Taj Mahal was earlier “Rauza-e-Munawara” which means Shining Tomb.
