Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks, and exposed to the most powerful tides in all of Europe, stands the “wonder of the west”, an impressive medieval abbey dedicated to the archangel Michael.

Its long, thin ornate pinnacles resemble arms reaching for heaven. This breathtaking site is best comparable to a dream, it was indeed to a dream that it owes its existence.

In the past, visiting the tidal island meant risking your life. Either get caught in between dangerous life-threatening tidal waters with deadly currents or risk becoming a victim of the unpredictable hidden quicksands, disaster could strike at any time.

Even so, it didn’t stop visitors in the past from flocking to the magic island topped by an amazing gravity-defying oratory, for this remarkable island is one of the most unforgettable sights in Europe.
