Trinidadian Folklore is Pure Nightmare Fuel
Beware what lurks amongst the trees
As a species, we have an affinity for the creepy.
We love the ghosts, the ghouls and the things that go bump in the night. We seek the monster that lurks beyond the tree line and the boogeyman underneath our bed.
Every culture has folklore. Legends of beings so dark and twisted that even the bravest of souls wouldn’t want to encounter them.
Paintings on the Wall
As a child, I was always curious about the paintings on the wall.
This wall was located in the downstairs bedroom of my grandparent’s house in Trinidad. The room was dingy, with a slightly musty aroma, that clung to every surface. To be honest there was always something ‘off’ with that room.
One day near Christmas, I got stuck wrapping presents with my grandmother and mother in that very room. Boredom set in, as I started to wander the perimeter of the room in a vain attempt to entertain myself.
My gaze happened upon some paintings that adorned the far-side wall. I knew these paintings existed, but my juvenile attention span never allowed me to examine them in the past. I studied them closely this time, picking up on every detail.
