Millennial to Marketer: A Love Letter

Dearest Marketer,

Please don’t take this the wrong way. What we have had in the past has been great but I know who I am and what I want so its time I expressed it.

It’s not you, its me. I am a part of the most dynamic group of individuals. Naturally, I am always craving the “next big thing”, which you know forces companies to develop new and innovative products and services constantly. I am extremely diverse and open-minded to change. Lately I’ve been valuing positive feelings and experiences over economics. Contrary to your assumptions, I am extremely trust-worthy and can be a potential long-term partner in this relationship if you work on the following with me:

  • Get personal. I want to feel connected and those traditional outbound marketing efforts are annoying and unimpressive to someone who wants to receive more customer-centric and personalized advertising.
  • Be Genuine. I’ll feel empowered if you deliver authentic content that I can relate to and share with others. I’m not naive so I’ll know when you’re presenting the real deal.
  • Talk digital to me. I’m tech savvy — on average I spend about 17.8 hours EACH DAY consuming media. You know where to find me so take advantage of every platform (especially Facebook).
  • Let’s collaborate. I want you to include me in the the creative and development process of your advertising campaign. If you understand and use my perspective, your content and brand will hit close to home for your entire audience.
  • I can be influenced. You can use this to your advantage. I may not trust what you have to present to me right away, but if I see my peers sharing your content, I’m much more likely to give it a chance.
  • I’ll never leave (as long as you give me a reason not to.) You won’t have to worry about me leaving as long as you keep building a solid relationship and show your presence, preferably online, in new ways.
  • Have fun with me! I want a browsing or e-commerce experience that’s entertaining. Deliver content in such a way that I can actively engage and get excited. Like I said earlier, I’m all about positive feelings.

With this in mind, we’ll be a match made in marketing heaven.
