Doria Brown is an up-and-coming environmental influencer, without even knowing it you have scrolled upon one of her Tik Toks. She goes by the name of The Earth Stewardess. Currently, Doria’s job is as an energy manager in the city of Nashua in the state of New Hampshire. What made Doria want to become an influencer is she noticed the lack of climate change content created by the people working in the field. Being an energy manager it is her job to purchase energy for the city of Nashua, her ultimate goal is to increase the city’s renewable energy. Being young she knew ways she could reach out to people and what age group to target and she knew exactly how. In 2020 she made educational Tik Toks about energy, sustainability, and science communication. In 2020 and now Tik Tok was and still is the craze. Especially during the pandemic, people spent mindless hours scrolling through videos.

Climate change is a word we hear so often these days. Since there is some much information on people Doria’s mission is to educate people on how if we change simple ways of living we could be helping the planet in so many ways. She is taking the word climate change and showing people what they can do. Climate change has so much information to it she shows the side people can do. When viewing her videos she provides a new way of doing habits we are used to. For example, during Christmas, she took an orange — a fruit most people have and made compostable holiday decor out of it! Doria is opening new directions for the future.

Being an influencer Doria’s mission is not just to lecture people, in essence, she is taking the theory about climate change and showing the way people can do their part to help the earth live more sustainably and be around for many more years to come. Doria’s videos are considered outputs- meaning people will be gaining knowledge, and awareness about new products or techniques they can do in their own lives to help the planet. Doing the outputs will affect the outcomes. Looking into ways to change old habits can lead to a positive outcome and help resource management and help shift our country to be more renewable and sustainable. If we look in the direction we are going now there are many negative impacts we are doing to the planet, but changing in a simple way could lead to more positive impacts. When creating content like what Doria is producing she is representing the Theory of Change. She is providing a deeper insight into a criterion which in this case is sustainability and trying to create a positive change.

Climate change has been a very controversial word for the past few years. A simple definition of climate change can be described as a significant change in surfaces of the planet and oceans that has been changing for quite some time. From an article, I read about opposing views of climate change theory. An opposing theory to climate change is the theory of human-caused climate change. While research does show that humans have had negative impacts on the earth, at the same time people can change and can change their ways of life to a more positive outcome. We do know that the environment is changing. In our current state, the past three winters have been mild, and especially this one, it would snow then melt a few days later. In our area, we have also seen more wind storms. With climate change being such a conversation topic, within the past couple of years, ``fake news” about climate change has been circulating around the web with a bunch of misinformation. A nonprofit organization named the CCDH helps monitor online hate and misinformation. This organization looks for keywords like, fraud, hoax, scam once finding these words appear on a post this organization flags the post. Once the post and or story is reviewed and it turns out to be misinformation then the post and or story is taken down to help lessen the spread of misinformation. According to the WWF, one misinformation piece by people that do not believe in climate change is that the earth’s climate is always changing. People that do not believe in climate change argue that the earth’s climate is always changing, while that is true, it has been proven that temperatures on the earth are rising due to the higher carbon dioxide levels. With this particular topic, people will believe what they choose and it will be hard to change their opinion. As many facts you show them they will still believe what they choose. While we still do not know all the scientific facts about climate change we can see that our earth is changing and we will have to do something about it.

Living in the year 2022, millennials like Doria are definitely thinking about new ways of living. Like hydroponic planting and going vegetarian and vegan. Our generation is open to the new change. We can even see it at our own campus. more plant-based options are available to eat, ride-sharing and carpooling are being more highly encouraged.

When coming across Doria, I knew the information she was presenting to get followers were something that people can relate and it was information that was fun and interesting and made you want to scroll through her page more. I connected with Doria very well because in my life I am very conscience of sustainable ways of living. I have seen many sustainability influencers on social media but, I have never seen an African American one. When going through her followers and comments I saw that she was reaching out to a new community as well. Many of the influencers I have seen are not people of color and I think it is great that Doria is rocking the influencer game reaching out to all communities. As humans, we do need to realize that the earth is changing and we have to do something about it before it is too late. If you are looking for ways to change your living habits, I highly suggest you check out Doria Brown at the Earth Stewardess on Tik Tok and Instagram.
