Multi-grammy winner artist Oliva Rodrigo is a famous pop/artist and writer that expressed a very powerful tone in her lyrics on her new album Sour. In her hit song Drivers License in particular she is telling her heartbreak story about the boy she once dated now moving on with a girl she worked with on one of her movies. This song was released in January of 2021 as just a single and now is on her newest album Sour. What is more to know about the lyrics of Drivers License she says “And you’re probably with that blonde girl, Who always made me doubt, She’s so much older than me, She’s everything I’m insecure about (Rodrigo) this was written based on true emotions and scenario which she went through when her ex-boyfriend started dating the girl they both worked with on the set of High school musical. At the time Rodrigo was hiding these feelings from the public, this song was a way for Rodrigo to tell her story and feelings. Olivia co-wrote the song with Dan Nigro, Rodrigo did not expect the song to be as popular as it became but at the end of the day, many people did connect with the song after being released. While the musician is telling her story it is evident that she is bruised in the song Driver’s License, it is difficult to live through a break-up and it becomes even more challenging to let go and watch the other person move on. Heartbreak is an existence that is hard to overcome.

Considering that Rodrigo’s ex-boyfriend whom she had feelings for, left and moved on with a girl she knew. She states and drops clues at the beginning of her song of who it is. In line seven she sings “And you’re probably with that blonde girl” which is alluding to another actress and musician Sabrina Carpenter. Even the lines after state how the girl made Olivia feel when she and Joshua Bessett were dating. After the breakup, one can argue that while it is hard to watch the person you were with move on, it can also be said that Rodrigo is jealous. In lines 17 through 21, she writes about how her friends are tired of hearing how much she misses him and how she drives through the suburbs imagining she is driving to him. When Olivia went through this heartbreak, she was just getting her license at the age of 17 and she always pictured herself driving to him after she got her license. Hence why the song’s name is Driver’s License. Going back to the jealousy point, in the chorus of the song she writes “And I know we weren’t perfect, But I’ve never felt this way for on one, oh, And I just can’t imagine how you could be so okay, now that I’m gone, I guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me, Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street. These lyrics could be an indication of her being jealous and heartbroken.

Lastly, in the last lyrics of the song she writes I know we weren’t perfect but I’ve never felt this way for anyone, And I just can’t imagine how you could be so okay, now that I’m gone ’Cause you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me,’ Cause you said forever, now I drive alone past your street, Yeah, you said forever, now I drive alone past your street( Rodrigo) in these lyrics, you can tell Rodrigo is still heartbroken and upset at the events that happened. While the Driver’s License shows how upset she is with both her ex-boyfriend and her old cast member, she still misses him very much. Overall her album Sour tends to have other songs about her break up, there is a song called Happier where she is wishing him to be Happier. At the same time, she is also still reminiscing about her relationship, and how upset she still is.

In conclusion at her age when you are so madly in love then it ends can be a hard life event to navigate. The message in the lyrics does show she is upset with both her boyfriend and his new girlfriend. When reality sets in it, you do feel bad about yourself and it is not a great feeling to have. It can be hard to move on if you keep carrying the burden of the past with you. Relationships are like dollar bills; they come and go.
