The Kardashians
The reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashian ended in 2021. Within this show it followed the Kardashian and Jenner family’s evolution with fame. Within the first season they focused on the sex-tap that had Kim Kardashin and R-jay in it. IN 2007, the first season of the show, the family were just starting to get their toes wet in the world of fame. Even the two youngest sisters, Kindle and Kyile, were just children who had yet to start their career. By the end of the end of the show the whole family was completely different. The majority of the children had their own, they gained immense amounts of money, and quit literally built their empire.
On April 14, 2022 The Kardashians started on Hulu. This is the show, which will be the focus of this review. This show starts completely opposite of where the family started in the first season of Keeping Up. The whole family has millions of dollars, many more businesses, and the family as a whole has gotten even bigger. The main characters of the show are the sisters of the show. There are five sisters. The oldest Kourtney Kardashian who has three children; Mason, Penelope, and Reign. The next is Kim Kardashain who is arguably the most known and most important character on the show. She is the most famous of all her siblings. Kim has four children; North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm. The youngest from the Kardashians side is Khloe who has only one child named True. The next two sisters have a different father, which makes them the Jenners. Kindle Jenner is the oldest of the Jenners. Kylie is the youngest and has two children; Stormi and the second child is yet to be named. It is important to mention Kris Jenner who is their mother and manager. She is seen throughout the show supporting all her daughters.
As of writing this, the shows has only released two episodes of the first season. From the first scene of the first episode it is very evident that the production value is very high. The first scene shows all the members of the family with a drone. The episode seems to be more polished then their original show. The filters, angles, and music create an aesthetic that the average American would never be capable of. While the drone is showing the entire family it shows the huge mansions, expensive cars, clothing, and other luxury items. Through the opening scene they also show their busy life. The song that is playing is “777” by Silk Sonic.
As the show progresses it show a barbecue at Kim’s shows with the entire family. Tristan Thomas is also there who is the Khloe’s baby-daddy and ex-boyfriend who has cheated on her in the eyes of public multiple times. Other significant others are their such as Corey, Kris’s boyfriend, and Travis Bakers, Kourtney’s new boyfriend. Multiple things happen at this barbecue. The first thing is that Kim announces that she will be guest staring at Saturday Night Live. Here she tries to humanise herself by stating that she is scared to do it and has some thoughts about dropping out. Kim is scared of embarrassing herself where he family makes jokes about her embarrassing them in the past.
The first scene at the barbecue highlights how important family is to all of the members. It displays that it is typical for them to just each and enjoy each other’s company. Even though they makes jokes about Kim, they also support her and give her encouragement. In their own interviews they overall all claim that she can do anything she puts her mind to. The theme of family is brought up in the second scene of this family gathering.
While Kim’s son saint is playing a video game, a picture of Kim’s crying face popped up on the screen. Thankfully Saint has not learned to read yet because the advertisement was claiming to have the another sex-tap of Kim. In this scene Kim is freaking out. The entire family comes to Kim’s side and tries to support her. There are later scene where Kim is talking to her lawyers and the majority of the girls are there. They listen to Kim and tell her that they will be there for her.
During the interviews with Kim regarding the threat of a sex-tape realising, she tries to own up to her past and put it behind her. This scene again tried to humanise her. She keeps repeating that this happened twenty years ago and that she should not have to relive this scandal. It seems as if the show is trying to play at the audiences heart strings. They desire for the audience to feel bad for her while also feeling proud because she is over feeling ashamed of this.
The airtime for the first episode was mostly focused on Kim. However, in the second episode the other sisters have more airtime. Kourtney talks about her relationship with Travis Baker and her long time ex-relationship Scott Disick who is the father of her children. She talks about how happy and in love she is with Baker and how they are looking for a house together. When she talks about Disick, she talks about the bad things he has talked about online with her. She does not want to be with him when Travis is also there. Khloe talks about her rocky relationship with Tristain Thomas and how he is trying to get back together with him. She also talks about her anxiety she has developed after all the scandals.
An important thing to mention is how it seems that these episodes try to go against what many people think about them. Many people believe that they are just famous for being famous, which may be true. However, through out the show they are showing what they do and how hard they work. It seems to try to convince the audience that they work hard for their position in life.
How the show displays drama and keeps the audience watching is by putting gas on old fires. They have conversations with each other or people who are not in the show as much about issues that happened before filming. By doing this they create tension and drama. The show seems to always follow the same routine. They talk about whats going on, then the family is there to support them. Then interviews they complain about it while also justifying why they have this place in life. The show seems to have the same repetition, which may seem boring. However, this last year the Kardashain family has been in many different headlines, which draws viewers to watch. Also, their unreachable life style makes it almost addicting to watch since for the majority of viewers they will never be able to live that life-style
. Overall the show is good for those who keep up with the current drama. With the aesthetic music and camera angles it makes this type of life sysle heavenly. However, for those who could care less about celebrity drama , they would hate the show since this is what the show orbits around. The constant drama is brought up in the media makes people addicted to hearing up it. I recommend this show to those who like the idea of the wealthy life-style and watch drama within Hollywood.
