Top 10 List COM250

  1. Third person effect

The third person effect is something that is important for everyone to know about. The idea that things affect others differently than oneself is an important concept for people to be aware of. The truth is that if one person can be affected by media that comes out, so can you. You’re Not somehow immune to the media just because you think you know better, that’s probably a way of controlling your thoughts already by thinking you aren’t able to be persuaded in a specific way.

2. Femvertising

This is a very important form of advertising due to the nature of stereotypes that are pushed in mainstream media. There are plenty of people that believe that women are less than men and should cover up if they don’t look a certain way. Femvertising is single handedly attacking the stereotypes that are shown in the mainstream media to empower women in their own bodies and identities. Attacking the stereotypes creates an open environment where women feel more comfortable and safer in themselves

3.Filter bubbles

It’s important that people get the whole truth of what they are looking up so they can make decisions based on the truth, not just fabricated bits of it. Filter bubbles are important because they show what the most relevant information is but it’s important that people are aware of the whole picture, not just what the search engines deem as important. The idea that digital media algorithms and recommendation engines limit people’s exposure to information and ideas by offering results that the search engine considers relevant. I think it’s necessary for people to understand the whole truth even if it’s not deemed as relevant so people can make educated opinions and decisions about things that are important.

4.Capitalism

Capitalism is what this country and the world is largely based upon, exchanging goods and services to support the economic market. Being able to understand this concept can put into perspective the values the world runs on. The unregulated part of this causes people to aimlessly buy things that they don’t need and encourages the problem of overconsumption and overproduction of goods and services that aren’t needed for living. The unregulated factor of capitalism creates a place where greed and want is dictating our lives to the point where it is affecting people in ways thet are completely understood yet.

5. Online dishabituation effect

The online dishabituation effect is a very important concept for people to be aware of because of how other people can interpret the things they hear online. People separate themselves from what they say online because they don’t think it will have an effect on other people when in reality it could have a profound effect on them. People need to regulate the things they say because everything said on the internet lives forever and can be brought back up later to be used against them. When people are looking for jobs or joining some kind of program there are background checks done on people often and if there is something that could be considered negative could be the deciding factor for someone not getting a job or position in the program.

The lack of restraint some people experience when communicating online

6. Emotional truths

Fiction has a way of targeting people’s emotions in ways that they might not even understand because they don’t know what they are feeling. It could have a way of showing them the things they feel. This is something that can help people relate and name what they feel without really knowing. This also makes us feel for characters so much that they feel like it’s happening to us even though we are just watching it through the show or movie.

7. Construction of social reality

I am not one to admit to this but, I think seeing things in the media have shaped my thinking in ways I dont even completely understand. The construction of social reality is how media shapes people’s personal and social identity through stories. Understanding now how much the media has influenced my personal development with my interactions with other people and just being alone. Seeing things that spark my interest in the media have influenced me tremendously proving how true this is in the world where media is so prevalent.

8. The paradox of tragedy

The pleasure that audiences experience when seeing bad things happen to characters is called the paradox of tragedy. It is interesting that peope find pleasure in seeing bad things happen in TV shows or movies but not in real life. What part of our human nature allows for us to think this is something that is acceptable? Another thing that I find very interesting is the fact that this is something that most people experience, it is not something that just crazy people experience, it is something that happens to your everyday person. This can also be described by stories that trigger a strong negative reaction and are emotionally satisfying. It can be seen through the amount of people who like watching scary movies where bad things constantly happen to the characters.

9. Social learning theory

In psychology the idea that people learn from observation and imitation of role models when their behavior is rewarded. People learn their behaviors by watching other people do it in their own way. People love to be rewarded for things that they do no matter what it is, if their poor behavior is rewarded with attention and attention is what they want they will keep doing it to get what it is they want from other people. If people’s parents happen to have a relationship with each other where they are effective communicators and the reward for it is living a happy lifestyle the child will want to do things in the same way the parents do so they can have the same outcome as them.

10. Desensitization

The media effects that occur when exposure lessens the emotional intensity of reader or viewer response; or the decreased levels of emotion that occurs after repeated exposure to events, ideas, images, or information. In recent years there has been an increase in violence seen in the media which results in the desensitization to violence seen in the media by people. Because the internet and media has become such a huge part of the lives we have today there is more chance of becoming desensitized to the violence in the world. Everything that happens in the world today is broadcasted for people to see so we don’t understand what is too much for us to process due to the mass influx of media.
