Jessica Milschus

She graduated from Central Queensland University with a Bachelor of Business (Accounting and Management) and is now in her second year of the Queensland Government IT Graduate Program.

Jessica loves the diversity of opportunities the program offers. In her role at CITEC, the Queensland Government’s ICT services provider, she has completed 6 rotations in different business areas. From finance to organisational change, Jessica has worked on a range of projects.

You’ve been part of the graduate program for 18 months now. What are some of the exciting projects you’ve worked on?

Working with CITEC I have had rotations in 6 different areas of the business where I’ve completed a specific project. My latest project with the finance area involved developing a 5 year service cost model of CITEC’s offering. This project was part of a broader review at CITEC to refine and improve the business’ service offer.

What do you enjoy most about working with the Queensland Government?

The opportunities at the Queensland Government are amazing and the work it delivers is varied. Anything you work on can open doors and create new opportunities.

You also have plenty of opportunities to work with senior staff and learn by watching how they apply their experience to deliver projects and deal with challenges.

How is your work is helping to advance Queensland’s digital future?

Our focus is on enhancing CITEC’s IT infrastructure to facilitate a better digital experience for Queenslanders. Government is transforming to meet the needs of Queenslanders. Being part of this change is very exciting.

How do you think the IT Graduate Program will kick start your career?

The program has given me a foot in the door, and how I use that advantage is up to me. So far, I’ve had such broad exposure to different areas, including IT change projects, business analysis, service management, finance, and now organisational change. The experience I’ve gained in these areas is invaluable. I’ve learnt more about what I enjoy, so I can confidently move my career in the right direction.

In addition to the work experience, the training I have completed during the program, including Prince2, ITIL, and BABOK, also boosts my career credentials.

The program offers graduates a progressive and interactive learning program

If I was thinking of applying for the 2018 IT Graduate Program, what advice would you give me?

APPLY, APPLY, APPLY! There is no better starting point for your first job after university. The IT Graduate Program not only offers mentoring and training opportunities, but gives you an instant network of peers from across government.
