Jan’s experience growing her team through the IT Graduate Program

Queensland Government IT Graduates are so good that Jan Van De Weyer needed more than 1.

Over the past 2 years Jan employed 2 graduates in the service management division of CITEC, Queensland Government’s ICT services provider. Jan has worked with Jessica, a business graduate, and Imran, an information technology and corporate systems management graduate.

Jan has tailored programs of work for each graduate, which has helped them understand the business while adding value to the work they’re delivering for CITEC.

What have you been working on with Jessica and Imran?

We designed a program for Jessica involving a number of rotations through CITEC ICT, all based on understanding the business. The rotation program is flexible, so Jessica has been able to take up other opportunities in other business areas and plan her own rotation in our Product Financial area.

Imran’s program has been tweaked to suit his skills and interests, while meeting CITEC ICT’s business requirements. Imran will spend time with our IT Service Management team applying the ITIL knowledge gained from his first rotation with the CITEC Service Centre.

How have Jessica and Imran added value to your team and your work?

Jessica and Imran are always eager to be involved and are willing to grab any opportunity. It’s refreshing to see their energy and enthusiasm which buoys others around them. They always deliver a high quality of work.

Do you think graduates have a role in helping to advance Queensland’s digital future?

Being ready for the digital future means that we need people who are open to possibilities, willing to learn and to be involved, and those who are flexible in their approach. We are fortunate to have access to the IT Graduate Program to create a pool of talented people.

What do you see is the value of the IT Graduate Program?

I never would have found Jessica or Imran without the support of the IT Graduate program team. They provide ongoing support and guidance for myself as a supervisor, and also keep an eye on their graduates, ensuring they all continue to benefit from the program.

Training for the 2-year program has been designed with a focus on soft skills development in year 1 and then departmental and career development activities in year 2. It’s a nice balance with the specific training that we have also arranged for Jessica and Imran.

If I was thinking of taking on a graduate for the 2018 intake, what would you tell me?

Take the leap and enjoy the benefits. Take 2 and get more than double the outcome. Get others in your organisation involved with developing the graduates.

Describe Jessica and Imran in 3 words.

Jessica — involved, active, aware.

Imran — thorough, reliable, promising.
