I want you to imagine Sally.

Sally is a business owner and a proud entrepreneur.

She is looking to grow her business and brand, and she is very committed to doing so. She is open for any new idea or advice that might help the advancement of her business and brand.

She is constantly checking new trends, watching Youtube videos, reading blogs, and testing out different ideas she has heard along the way. She tried social media, she tried blogging, she tried making Youtube videos ..., and you know what? Some of it actually worked! She is getting decent traffic to her sites, and even some sales. But there is one thing constantly sitting at the back of her mind.

The one thing she heard in every Youtube video and read in every blog.

The one piece of advice every Internet ‘Guru’ gives.

The REAL money is in the list.

The real money is in the email list. So she decides to try it out.

The only problem is…she doesn’t really know how. She has heard different people talk about things like how often you should mail your audience, how to increase your open rates, how to write email copy… but nobody really tells you what to do if your email list equates to zero. Nobody tells you HOW to get those first 100 subscribers.

My goal with this article is to do just that. This is a short guide to the most effective list-building tricks available.

So let’s get right into it.

Way #1: The Call To Action

We often assume that it is enough to just put a little sign-up form on the end of our website, or a link in the description of our Youtube video, and that will generate email leads. We are very soon faced with the cold, hard truth…

…if you don’t tell your users what to do, they will most likely do nothing.

We need to remind our users frequently that they should sign up for our emails. We need to constantly remind them of the bonus content they will get if they sign up (we will talk about that next), of the special discounts they will get, or even just updates about new products etc.

We should put a clear call-to-action at the end of every article we write, and every video we make, and remind our users that if they like what they just saw/read/heard, and they want more content/discounts/anything else, that they should sign up for our email list.

Way #2: The Lead Magnet

Even if we direct our users to our sign up form, they most likely won’t sign up, unless there is some compelling content waiting for them on the other side.

So, we have to make sure to give our users what they want, and we will do that in the form of an ethical bribe. We will give them something that is valuable to them, in exchange for their email address.

In digital marketing, a lead magnet is defined as “an irresistible bribe offering a specific chunk of value to a prospect in exchange for their contact information.”

Now, a lead magnet can manifest itself in different ways, it can be an e-book, a free pdf report, an exclusive video, discount code for your products and services, or even simply the access to your most premium content, that you send in our email newsletters exclusively.

When creating a lead magnet, you need to have a few things in mind.
First, you must make sure that the offer is appealing to your users. Take one of the biggest problems of your target audience, solve it, and then package it in a compelling offer.

Next, the lead magnet itself should be concise and to the point. You don’t want to write a 100 page e-book as a lead magnet, a 10 page report will work just fine. You don’t want to cover too many topics in your lead magnet, pick one topic, that is of most interest to your readers, and create an irresistible offer around that.

Putting it together

You should be using both of these strategies at the same time, to get the maximum results. You should create a great lead magnet, that your audience would really love to get, and wouldn’t mind exchanging their email address for, and also, you should be giving clear instruction to all of your existing traffic (on blog posts, videos…), to sign up for your email list.

Now this is just the tip of the iceberg, there is much more when it comes to email marketing and building a list, but these are the fundamentals that you can apply at once, and you will most likely see instant results.

Until next time,

Luka
