What is the DSD course? This is the service design course where…

  • You learn by doing a real project for a real client. This goes directly to your CV and portfolio as a proper service design case.
  • The course is taught by a practitioners not theorists. Both Risto and Tuomo have extensive knowledge on consulting, coaching, and doing service design.
  • The methodology taught is actually used in companies and continuously updated. Lean Service Creation has thousands of users worldwide and the handbook has over 15 000 copies printed. Risto is one of the founding fathers of the whole methodology and movement.
  • And the course has a proven track record of being consistently one of the best in Aalto. Four times awarded as one of the best in Computer Science based on student feedback.

What is the course all about?

“This course gives superb hands-on skills in service design!”

The gist of the course is to do real projects, not academic exercises. Therefore, all the participants work on real business/design cases from real companies/organisations.

Post-it notes, walls, canvases create a service concept in the DSD course.

The organisations for Fall 2018 are Mehiläinen, Mandatum Life, Elisa, Leanheat and Martat.

As mentioned above, the course takes only 16–20 students (4–5 teams with 4 people in each team, and each team has its own client). This guarantees top notch mentoring and loads of interaction during the lectures and workshops.

“Easily the best course I’ve had in Aalto! A lot of work, but ‘no pain, no gain’!”

“The most educative, inspiring and productive course in my Aalto career.”

What are the teaching methods on the course?

Service Design is something you can’t learn by reading books. Therefore, the course puts enormous effort into hands-on teaching and coaching. The course is taught by Risto Sarvas, an adjunct professor at Aalto, one of the best known professional teachers of service design, and also a practicing service designer. The course mentor Tuomo Laine has experience using LSC methodology in forming his own company, consulting large corporations, and teaching LSC to students and practitioners. Also, each team will have a dedicated person from the client who will help and support the group on a weekly basis.

“The meetings with course staff helped to get forward with the assignment.”

For further questions contact Risto (risto.sarvas(ät)aalto.fi). Otherwise, watch this publication for updates such as presentations of the case-companies and other relevant posts about the course.

“Overall I felt the course was inspiring high quality dive into practical service design. Tools and methodologies felt very professional and I enjoyed the rich slides, conversations around the topics and real world examples. There wasn’t really anything boring on this course. No complaints.”

Edward and Jouni work on their DSD project.

“The hands-on attitude was awesome, and the tools provided were not just nice to learn, but have already proved themselves useful in my other projects. It was also superb to get to work with the great students and the clients.”
