BLACKPINK is a girl singing and dancing group launched by YG Entertainment in 2016, consisting of 4 members, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. With the rise of K-pop, more and more people are focusing on the international influence of K-pop. BLACKPINK is one of the most popular groups that have made a name for themselves internationally.

How did they go from debutantes to “the most popular girl group in the world”?

Unsurpassed achievements:

BLACKPINK is one of the most followed female music artists on social media and top streaming platforms, and the only girl group with millions of sales + millions of listens. In just a few short years since August 8, 2016, the female idols have hit the prestigious Billboard charts and reached both the 1st and 2nd place on Billboard’s main album chart with ‘Born Pink’.

BLACKPINK already has 40 videos with over 100 million views on their YouTube channel. With a total of 84.3 million followers on their official Youtube channel, they are currently the number one artist in the world in terms of YouTube subscriptions and have surpassed 10 billion views!!! And the most watched ‘DDU-DU DDU-DU’ reached 2 billion views. The latest release ‘Pink Venom’ in mid-2022 has surpassed 100 million views in just 29 hours.

The Times likened the four to global superstars, hailing them as trendsetters. Each of the four has gone on to become a global brand ambassador for ten top luxury brands such as CHANEL, YSL, CELINE and DIOR, and they have created a buzz that cannot be ignored, doubling the sales of these brands as a direct result of their ability to bring in goods. According to TIME, “BLACKPINK has succeeded in getting everyone’s attention not only in terms of headphones, but also in terms of fashion and screens.”

Cross-regional cooperation:

Lady gaga had personally invited BP to collaborate with her. On 28 May 2020, BP and Lady Gaga’s collaboration song ‘Sour Candy’ came out across the world. Less than 24 hours after the song went on sale, ‘Sour Candy’ reached number one in 57 territories, including the iTunes charts.

In addition to this, they also collaborated with famous singer and actress Selena Gomez on ‘Ice Cream’. This approach will ensure that BP will be a big hit as soon as they release a song and will be in the mainstream pop scene.

Contributing to charity activities:

Back on 18 September 2021, YG announced that BP had been appointed as a United Nations Ambassador for the Sustainable Development Goals, the first time the UN had appointed an Asian artist. Previously, the UN SDG Ambassadors were made up of different heads of state, such as prime ministers, presidents and queens, as well as some world-class artists. This appointment is seen as a strong testament to BP’s global reach.
