University of Manchester students: we will cover this topic in the session on Monday week 9, 25th March. If you missed the session, please work through the below and leave a comment, then contact the course leaders (details in Blackboard) to catch up.

The ability to critically analyse text, data and other information is a fundamental skill for your time at university and beyond. This session will take you through some key steps in critically analysing information and allow you to develop skills that will support your analysis in the future. You will have the opportunity to practice using strategies to clarify the process of analysis and aid in organising your thoughts. Specifically, we will cover activating prior knowledge, drawing new connections and the importance of adding your own opinion. The first of these two steps involve analysis and the last is the way in which you can be critical.

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Develop strategies to connect what you already know to information you are analysing
  • Practice articulating your own analysis of the information
  • Understand the fundamental importance of moving forward in understanding during analysis (by adding your own opinion)
