Li Yuchun(Chris Lee), born on 10 March 1984 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, is one of the most influential female pop singers in China, a songwriter, music producer and concert director, known as China’s “Queen of the Stage”. In 2005, she won the national championship of “Super Girl” and was featured on the cover of Time Magazine (Asia edition).

As of now, she has 16,352,000 followers on Weibo and 2,350,000 followers on instagram. She also already has 3.393 million followers on her studio Weibo, and has over 70 original songs since her debut in 2005. Li is a true popular star voted for by the Chinese people themselves, a sign of a new era of entertainment in China. She is China’s lone idol, an influential figure in China’s cultural arts of the decade. (Reviewed by China Newsweek)

Most unusually, she is also the lifelong face of the LIYUCHUN Fans Charity Fund . The LIYUCHUN Fans Charity Fund is the first fan-donated and named fund in China and was established in 2006 at the China Red Cross Foundation with the support of Li and the advice of many of her fans. Since March 19, 2006, all donations from Fans have been unified into the “LIYUCHUN Fans Charity Fund”, and as of March 12, 2019, a total of nearly 17 million yuan has been accepted. Every year on Li’s birthday, Li’s fans donate to the Maize Love Fund, and on 10 March 2021, Li’s birthday, fans donated over a million dollars.

As a non-traditional woman in the eyes of the public (for example, with long hair and long dresses), Li has always been true to herself. In the 15 years since her debut, Li has been subjected to numerous criticisms and judgments due to her unisex image, but she has never changed herself because of the public’s comments, as she says herself: I have lived quite a life of my own, and the most rebellious thing I have done is to be myself all the time, which is actually quite crazy in itself. At the same time, she also wrote the songs “For Girls” and “Priceless Sister” to encourage women to be brave and be themselves!

Her hope is all in the lyrics: “How many storms does every girl have to go through to grow up, being yourself is not just a simple slogan” (Priceless Sister)

“All the girls, people do what you gonna do. may you be treated gently by the world, your heart be full of love, take off all your guards and be free, do what you wanna do” (“For the Girls”)

The topic for Girls on Weibo was read by over 1.4 billion people on Weibo, and Priceless Sister was read by over 400 million people.

Overall, despite all the criticism and hurt that Lee herself has suffered because of social media and the internet, she has made a positive and uplifting impact on her fans and society through social media. I hope all girls are like her and have no inhibitions to be themselves.
